It’s important to Dr. Halderman and his team that we give you all your options and that you fully understand any treatment we complete for you. If you don’t see your question listed below, just give us a call and we’ll be happy to answer it.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
Whether you are nervous about being in the dental chair or if you are undergoing a procedure, we offer the following types of sedation:
Nitrous oxide—Often called “laughing gas,” this safe gas is breathed in through a mask, putting patients in a relaxed state almost immediately. Because the gas leaves the body quickly, you are free to drive yourself home afterward and get on with your day.
Oral sedation—Prior to your appointment, Dr. Josh Halderman will write you a prescription for an oral sedative you can take to help you feel relaxed while you are here. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
IV sedation—This level of sedation is generally reserved for those undergoing more serious treatment, such as wisdom teeth extraction. You won’t remember anything about the procedure after it’s complete.
Don’t let anxiety or nerves keep you from getting the dentistry you need. Talk to Dr. Halderman about what type of sedation dentistry might be best for you.
For some people, the thought of having their teeth cleaned makes them feel fear. In fact, some people endure tooth pain and discomfort rather than see a dentist about it. The good news is that we don't live in the middle ages anymore. Dentistry can be a comfortable and stress-free experience.
For patients in Galloway, OH, who have anxiety about the dentist, sedation dentistry can help. We can use sedation across the spectrum of dental treatments, from tooth cleaning to surgical procedures.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry allows patients to relax during dental treatments. When you are nervous, your body can tense up and make it harder for your dentist to treat you. Dental sedation can make you feel comfortable and secure enough to open your mouth wide as necessary and not tense up.
Sedation dentistry can be as simple as nitrous oxide—or "laughing gas—in order to help you relax and feel stress-free. This gas wears off quickly and allows you to drive home from the office. Some types of sedation involve ingesting a pill about an hour before the procedure. While the medicine may make you drowsy, you'll still be awake. For more invasive procedures, some sedation dentistry involves IV sedative drugs to allow for deep sedation. General anesthesia is also available for deep sedation.
Sedation dentistry works for patients who feel anxiety before a dental appointment or for surgical procedures. There is no reason for a patient to feel pain or discomfort unnecessarily. Ask your Galloway, OH dentist about sedation dentistry if you feel it can work for you.
Typically, in our Galloway, OH dental office, we offer sedation dentistry to patients who request a method to help them relax. In some cases, this is to address anxiety around dentistry and dental treatment; in other cases, sedation dentistry might benefit patients who have other challenges when it comes to sitting still or having work done in their mouths.
Reasons To Choose Sedation Dentistry
Mental and physical limitations – For some people, sitting still can be uncomfortable or even impossible. Sedation dentistry can help many individuals stay in the chair longer so that treatments like deep dental cleanings or crowns can be completed.
Complex treatment plans – Full mouth cases, veneers, and multiple crowns can mean extensive time in the dental chair. Sedation dentistry will make your appointment seem like a breeze. You will have a very limited sense of time, and your appointment will feel dreamy and comfortable.
Over-active gag reflex – If you have a strong gag reflex, even having a dental cleaning can be uncomfortable. Gagging throughout your appointment will slow it down and is extremely challenging. Sedation dentistry will calm your automatic response to gagging and allow you to be relaxed throughout your visit.
